Camila Giorgi it landed in the semifinals of WTA 1000 of Montreal without losing a single set.
In the Italian night, the 29-year-old from Macerata, n.71 in the ranking, beat the American in the quarterfinals for 64 76 (2), in an hour and 39 minutes of the match. Cori Gauff, 24 WTA and 15th seeded, hitting his 16th career semifinal, the first in a “1000”.
In the semifinal Camila will play the entrance to the final with the American Jessica Pegula, n.30 WTA.
In the first set Camila started well and in the fifth game, enlightened by a couple of anthology answers, she did not miss the opportunity to snatch the serve from “Coco”, then stretching to 4-2. Giorgi defended the advantage with authority and secured a first set 6-4 in which she did not even concede a break point.
At the start of the second set came the reaction of Gauff who, thanks to a bad second game of the blue, with a few too many legal errors, took advantage of it to climb 3-0. Camila, however, did not break down: in the fifth game she got three opportunities in a row for the counter-break, she wasted the first two but not the third (3-2) and then completed the comeback, impacting on 3 all.
Camila then served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 but after missing two match points both times she gave up.
We went to the tiebreak and here Gauff led 2-1 but suffered a comeback from Camila who won 6 consecutive points, closing the game 7 to 2.
