WSJ: USA convinces European countries not to cooperate with Chinese company Nuctech

The US urges European countries to avoid cooperation with the Chinese manufacturer of baggage and passenger screening systems Nuctech, saying that it threatens European security and business. This is written by an American newspaper The Wall Street Journal with reference to the documents at her disposal and sources.

According to the newspaper, the US National Security Council is campaigning against Nuctech along with several other US government agencies. They convince European governments of the need to stop working with Nuctech, claiming that it is connected with the Chinese authorities. Last year, the United States also urged European countries to abandon cooperation with Huawei – however, they were not able to achieve unambiguous success in this direction, as the EU continued to cooperate with a Chinese company.

According to WSJ, citing a document prepared by the US Department of State, Nuctech operates in many European countries and it accounts for 90% of the market for screening sea cargo and more than 50% of the market for screening baggage and passengers at airports. According to U.S. officials, Nuctech, through its verification system that receives passenger data, may pass it on to the Chinese authorities. Until 2014, the company’s equipment was installed at some American airports, but subsequently its work in the United States was discontinued.

Nuctech has already stated that it does not receive any government assistance or government instructions and that the company’s equipment does not pose a security risk.
