Wrong update: combi microwaves feel like a steam oven

Due to an incorrect software update, owners of a certain type of AEG combi microwave have not been able to use their appliance for two weeks. The error makes the microwave oven think it is a steam oven, and that problem cannot be solved remotely.

The AEG KMK968000T has smart functions that allow you to preheat the oven remotely, for example. The device may also receive software updates from the manufacturer. At the beginning of this month that went wrong, owners who had connected their device to the internet noticed. From one moment to the next the oven stopped working,

Elger van der Wel from Utrecht also experienced this. “Normally you use an oven like this twice a week, but we just had a baby and then you use it all day long. So I was standing there in the middle of the night heating a hot water bottle and then suddenly you’re all alone just one more steam oven option and error messages.”

Fitter with usb stick

The next day, the oven was not the only one struggling with an identity crisis, although a spokesperson for Electrolux (which carries the AEG brand name) cannot say how many customers are left with a non-functioning appliance.

The software error is not easy to fix. At least not remotely, because due to the wrong software, the confused ovens can no longer connect via WiFi.

“A mechanic should really come by with a USB stick,” says the Electrolux spokesperson. The company wants to call all affected users by March 21 to schedule a free appointment. “We find it very annoying and we want to solve it as soon as possible.”

Shortly after the discovery of the problem, Van der Wel already had a mechanic visit, but he was not yet able to repair the oven with a USB stick. He is now waiting for a new appointment. “In the meantime, luckily we can borrow an old microwave from the neighbors.”

The company is investigating what caused the wrong update to be sent, as well as how to prevent disconnection from the Wi-Fi.
