An 88-year-old woman had written down her PIN on a small note to be sure. She kept the note and pass in the same place. The woman had let in someone posing as an employee of an energy company.
Subsequently, money was withdrawn twenty times with her bank card within two days. In this way, a total amount of 7,000 euros disappeared from her account.
The elderly woman requested the money back from the bank, but the bank refused, because she had ‘acted grossly negligently by keeping the pin code on a note in her home’. The Dutch Financial Services Complaints Institute (Kifid) agrees with the bank and states that despite her age, the woman should have better protected herself against possible fraud.
