Writer Inez van Dullemen passed away yesterday, her publisher De Bezige Bij announced. She was 96. In 1949 she made her debut with the novella Meeting the other. Her latest book A ship full of melons appeared in 2017.
In the seventy years that she was active, she wrote about thirty collections of short stories, travel books, plays and novels. Of Formerly is dead, about the decline and death of her parents, Van Dullemen broke through with the general public in 1976. The book was awarded the Jan Campert Prize and in the following decade it was made into a film by Ine Schenkkan, who received a Golden Calf for it.
In the work of novelist Van Dullemen, encounters with people were central. She loved to travel and incorporated her experiences into her books, which often dealt with distant countries and cultures.

In 1950 she won with the novella The wheel a travel grant and with that she spent a year in Spain and Paris. In Paris she met her husband, theater maker Erik Vos, whom she married in 1954.
She continued to travel and lived with her family in the US for two years in the 1960s. During that period, de Volkskrant published letters in which she wrote about American society. In 1961 she was awarded the Multatuli Prize for The old man.
