BVHerman Brusselmans (65) smoked his very last cigarette on Saturday. Or so the writer hopes. Brusselmans is one of the figureheads of ‘Stoptober’, an annual campaign that encourages people to definitively renounce cigarettes. “I think my son would be better off growing up without seeing a smoking father as an example.”

The ‘Stoptober’ campaign kicked off on a large scale on Saturday in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. Together with Maxime Meiland (27), Herman smoked his very last cigarette there. “I have wanted to quit smoking for a long time, especially with the arrival of my son Roman. When they asked me to participate in that campaign, I didn’t hesitate,” says the writer, who has just published his new novel ‘The Marriage of Jan & Sofie’.
Brusselmans has been smoking for 55 years and has tried to quit several times without success. “I started because I saw my father smoking. That’s why I think Roman would be better off growing up without a smoking daddy as an example,” he explains his motivation. Since the birth of his son in February this year, the writer only smokes cigarettes outside. “That’s why I was I have already dropped from 2 packs to about 1 pack per day. But now I want to get rid of it completely.”
Fifty percent chance of success
In the meantime, the writer has sworn off cigarettes for about 24 hours. “It’s very disappointing,” he continues. “I’m walking at the moment and I just see a woman passing by who is smoking. All I can think is: ‘Give them to me.’” Fortunately, this is possible. Brusselmans calls on a few aids: nicotine patches and lozenges. “I’ve been sitting here all day looking fancy,” he says.
According to Brusselmans, the Stoptober campaign is a success with approximately 50 percent of participants. Because he is one of the figureheads, he also receives financial compensation. “By not smoking I save a lot of money – certainly a few hundreds of euros. I receive that amount from the organization.”
