Alexander Kabakov was born on October 22, 1943 in Novosibirsk. After graduating from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the University of Dnepropetrovsk, he worked for some time as an engineer at the Yangel rocket design bureau in Yuzhmash. His journalistic career began in the first half of the 1970s in the Gudok newspaper, and subsequently he also worked for Moskovskie Novosti, Kommersant, The Metropolitan Evening Newspaper, and The New Eyewitness. In addition, he served as editor-in-chief of Sacvoyage SV magazine.
Kabakov’s account includes a number of works, including such well-known as “The Refuser”, “Knowingly false fabrications”, “Punching, or Kristapovich’s Approach”, “The Writer”, “The Adventures of a Real Man”, “The Pretender”, “The Last Hero” , “Moscow Tales”, “Extrapolator Travels and Other Tales”, “Escape Is Considered”, “Sentenced” and “The Fugitive”. Some of them were filmed – in particular, about the films “Ten years without the right of correspondence” by Vladimir Naumov and “The Refuser” Sergei Snezhkin.
The writer himself in an interview admitted that “Moscow Tales”, as well as the novel “Everything Is Fixable”, which were published in the middle of the 2000s, considered his greatest success as the author.
“I believe that the Moscow Tales, even in form, not to mention the very idea of retelling classical plots, are very successfully, very skillfully made. This scripture in the image, absolute, one hundred percent, continuous parody. Actually, the whole text consists of parodies. This is a very complex form, and, in my opinion, I managed to overcome it. According to Kabakov, the work in journalism, which he devoted about 50 years, gave him as a person and writer a character.
