New Delhi: Wrestling star Vinesh Phogat returned the Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna award in solidarity with Sakshi Malik. Media reported that Phogat returned with the Arjuna Award plaque in front of Karthavyapath. The report also indicates that there is currently a strong protest of sportspersons in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office.
After Brij Bhushan’s loyalist Sanjay Singh was elected to the new governing body of the wrestling federation, Vinesh had earlier announced that he would return the awards in solidarity with Sakshi Malik who announced his retirement from wrestling.
Vinesh had pointed out that when wrestlers win medals, they are considered the pride of the country, but when they demand justice for the hardships they faced, they are labeled as traitors. Vinesh had criticized that the government did not keep its promise and justice was denied.
Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Deflympics champion Virender Singh Yadav returned the Padma Shri awards they had won.
After the wrestling federation suspended the new governing body under the pressure of sportspersons, wrestler Bajrang Poonia had stated that he will take back the Padma Shri award only if it is ensured that justice is done. After this, Vinesh Phogat also returned the awards to the government.
