Wrestling Controversy: Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik vs Center Appointed Monitoring Committee

New Delhi – Wrestling stars Bajrang Poonia and Sakshi Malik will testify against the committee appointed by the Center to oversee the National Wrestling Federation, which has been embroiled in sex allegations. Both alleged that they did not keep their promise to listen to the players before forming the committee. Punia and Malik pointed this out in a tweet tagged the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Sports Minister.

“Before the formation of the supervisory committee, it was promised that they would hold discussions with us. But it is sad that they did not consult with us before forming the committee’ – Punia, who is also a medal winner in Tokyo Olympics, and Sakshi pointed out in a similar tweet.

The Center appointed a five-member committee chaired by boxing star MC Mary Kom for supervision. The committee will also probe the sex allegations against federation president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches. A report will be given to the Ministry of Sports within 4 weeks.

Mary Kom was the chairperson of the seven-member committee appointed by the Indian Olympic Association earlier. Other members of the committee are wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, badminton player Thripti Murgunde, Target Olympic Podium Scheme captain Rajagopalan and SAI executive director Radhika Sriman. The appointment is an interim measure.

Federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will stand down from his duties until the monitoring committee appointed by the central government for the running of the wrestling federation submits its report. The committee will report within four weeks on the allegations against the office bearers. Brij Bhushan Singh said that he will cooperate with the committee.
