Wrestlers, superheroes and Aztec warriors at the Mexico City Marathon

Mexico City. A runner’s stride during a marathon has a unique aura. With each step, participants write their life story in invisible letters.

“Not everyone is crazy enough to run a marathon,” a 90-year-old woman tells her daughter from the starting line, next to the Olympic University Stadium during the 41st edition of the Mexico City Marathon.

Along the 42 kilometer 195 meter route, countless anecdotes occur and many characters emerge. Men running with emblematic masks, such as those of ‘El Santo’ and ‘Blue Demon’, superheroes such as ‘Spiderman’ and ‘Deadpool’, Aztec warriors and a man in a star costume, which lit up from its start in the south of the capital.

As the kilometres go by, the support of the public becomes an extra fuel for the competitors. A simple “Come on!”, “You are much more than this!”, “You are incredible!” is enough to make some tears slide down the cheeks of those who, at this point in the race, are already in an internal struggle not to give up.

At the end of the test, the legs of those who reached this stage give their last effort and resist the step to the screams of their loved ones, who wait for their gladiators in front of the National Palace.

Some cross the finish line with a smile and tears on their faces, others are held by the shoulder by other runners or members of the medical service when they have cramps, and many more raise their hands to the sky, because during the journey they have already told their story with each step.
