New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has given direct qualification to wrestlers Bajrang Poonia and Vinesh Phogat for the upcoming Asian Games. This was informed by the ad-hoc panel of the federation.
The ad-hoc committee took the decision without asking the national team coaches for permission. This has led to huge protests among the coaches. Bajrang will compete in the men’s 65 kg category and Vinesh in the women’s 53 kg category.
PTI reported that panel member Ashok Garg said that the two players were excluded from the selection trial. Reported. The selection trial will start on July 22. Bajrang and Vinesh Phogat were among the wrestlers who protested for the arrest of the former president of the National Wrestling Federation, Brij Bhushan. Bajrang is also an Olympic medalist for India.
Vinesh Phogat won gold in the 53 kg category at the 2018 Asian Games. Fogut is currently training in Budapest, Hungary. The exclusion of both of them from the trials has created minor problems for the teammates as well.
