Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) congratulates frontline health workers and the Chinese public. They are considered successful in fighting the corona virus outbreak (Covid-19).
“Our deepest congratulations go to the frontline health workers in China and the population who are working together tirelessly to bring the disease to these very low levels,” said WHO Health Emergencies Program executive director Michael Ryan in a press briefing on Monday ( 7/9/2020).
Ryan responded to a question about the fact that China has had no local Covid-19 infections for more than two weeks. Currently all new cases come from abroad.
As reported Xinhuanet, Ryan also attributed China’s success to the synergy between the community, scientific institutions, public health agencies in the government. But he asked China to remain vigilant.
“So we congratulate the frontline workers and the community in China on achieving such successful results,” he said.
“But as we have learned in other countries … it will not end anywhere until it ends everywhere … As life returns to normal in many countries and especially in China, there is always a risk that the disease may recur.”
Bruce Aylward, senior adviser to the WHO director general and leader of the international Covid-19 expert mission in China, said China was making history. Because it doesn’t report local Covid-19 infection, even though 20 days without local transmission does not mean there is no virus.
“But it does provide an opportunity to reflect a little bit about what we saw when we were in China,” said Aylward.
China’s current success, he said, can be attributed to three aspects. It is investment at the state level in public health infrastructure, a sense of individual responsibility among the Chinese people, and extraordinary efforts to build additional capacity and preparedness even as positive numbers decline.
“I think all of that is part of the reason that we see currently low rates of transmission which hopefully can be maintained,” added Aylward.
This outbreak first appeared in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in December 2019. China itself is in 39th place with the most positive cases of corona in the world.
According to the data Worldometers, China has 85,144 positive cases, 4,634 died, and 80,335 patients have recovered. Meanwhile, globally, 27.4 million people have been infected with corona in the world, with 896 thousand deaths and 19 million recovered.
