So, what is a hantavirus?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hantaviruses are a family of viruses that are spread mainly by rodents, including rats. Any type of hantavirus infection in humans can cause various diseases.
Hantavirus in the United States is known as the ‘New World’ and triggers hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). While another type, called ‘Old World’, is found in Europe and Asia, and triggers hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Each type of hantavirus has a specific host in the rodent species. This virus can be transmitted through the urine, feces, and saliva of animals to humans. Rarely transmitted by bite.
What about the symptoms of hantavirus?
The symptoms caused can be:
- Tired quickly
- Gag
- redness
Other symptoms that can accompany are:
- Fever
- Bleeding
- Kidney damage
- The incubation period for hantavirus is usually 7-14 days.
Is it dangerous and deadly?
One of the syndromes caused by the hantavirus, HPS has a mortality rate of about 38 percent.
