Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Barbados will fire Queen Elizabeth II as head of state next week. This event would break the territory’s colonial ties to the British empire, which had lasted nearly 400 years.
Barbados would later become a fully-fledged republic. Queen Elizabeth herself, is the head of 15 countries including Great Britain, Australia, Canada to Jamaica.
“This is the end of the story of colonial exploitation of mind and body,” said Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, a Barbados historian. Reuters, Wednesday (24/11/2021).
“The islanders have fought, not only for freedom and justice, but to escape the tyranny of imperial and colonial authority,” added the vice chancellor of The University of the West Indies.
Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, will travel to Barbados for the ceremony to oust his mother as head of state. The birth of this republican form of state, occurred 55 years since Barbados declared independence.
Barbados’ move is the first in which a country has removed a queen as head of state in nearly 30 years. Previously Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, proclaimed itself a republic but remained in the commonwealth.
The Commonwealth itself is an association of mostly former British colonies, home to 2.5 billion people. There are at least 53 countries that are members.
