Wow, These 3 Countries Walk-Out of the G20 Meeting

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – UK, United States (USA) and Canada take action walk-out coordinated from the G20 meeting. The action was taken as a form of protest against Russia’s attack on Ukraine which began on February 24.

Representatives from the three countries left the session as the Russian delegation spoke at the meeting in Washington. The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, and a senior UK Treasury official were among those who left the talks.

Action walk-out it comes as Western leaders challenge Russia’s membership in the G20 group, which includes the US, UK, France and Germany, as well as powerful developing nations including China, Brazil and India.

“We are united in our condemnation of Russia’s war against Ukraine and will push for stronger international coordination to punish Russia,” UK Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, according to a Reuters report, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she did not approve of the presence of a senior Russian official.

Previously, the US Treasury said that Yellen met with Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati to emphasize that there would be no business as usual for Russia in the global economy.

Meanwhile, in comments made shortly before the protests, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva warned that 75 years of development progress was being threatened by the breakdown of international cooperation.

Asked about reports of a potential boycott at the G20 meeting, Georgieva said the world had reached an important moment for the global partnership to tackle a range of issues including the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the climate emergency and rising poverty.

“Obviously there are very, very troubling facts that we have to deal with. I can honestly say that I never thought that I would live through another war in Europe of this scale,” he said.
