Wow, the moon is far from the earth

Jakarta

This is unrelated to the Apogee and Perigee phenomena, but scientists have discovered the fact that the Moon continues to move away from the Earth. Here are the estimated causes and effects.

By staring at the Moon in the night sky, you may never have imagined that Earth’s natural satellite is slowly receding. This is not an apogee phenomenon, but in fact the Moon is moving away. Scientists reveal why.

In 1969, NASA’s Apollo mission installed reflective panels on the moon. This effort shows that the Moon is currently receding 3.8 cm from the Earth every year.

If we take the Moon’s current recession rate and project it back in time, the end result is a collision between the Earth and the Moon about 1.5 billion years ago.

However, the Moon formed about 4.5 billion years ago, which means that the current recession rate is a bad guide for the Moon’s past.

Researchers from Utrecht University and the University of Geneva used a combination of techniques to try to gain insight into the past of our solar system.

“We recently found the perfect place to discover the long-term history of the Moon. And this does not come from studying the Moon itself, but from reading signals in the ancient rock strata on Earth. Our latest study appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, “said Joshua Davies and Margriet Lantink, principal investigators of the study, cited by Phys.org, Wednesday (10/12/2022).

Reveal cyclical climate change

In 1972, Australian geologist AF Trendall raised questions about the origin of the various cyclic scales. He suggested that the cyclical pattern could be related to past climatic variations caused by the “Milankovitch cycle”.

The Milankovitch cycle describes how periodic changes in the shape of the Earth’s orbit and the orientation of its axis affect the distribution of sunlight received by the Earth over a span of years.

Currently, the dominant Milankovitch cycle changes every 400,000 years, 100,000 years, 41,000 years and 21,000 years. These variations exert strong control over our climate over long periods of time.

A prime example of Milankovitch’s past climatic influences is the occurrence of periods of extreme cold or heat, as well as wetter or drier regional climatic conditions.

This climate change has significantly changed conditions on the earth’s surface, such as the size of lakes. These changes also explain the periodic greening of the Sahara desert and low oxygen levels in the deep ocean.

The Milankovitch cycle also influences the migration and evolution of flora and fauna, including our own species. The signs of these changes can be read through the changes in sedimentary rocks.

The distance between the Earth and the Moon is directly related to the frequency of one of the Milankovitch cycles, the cycle of climatic precession. This cycle arises from the precession (wobble) movement or changes in the orientation of the Earth’s rotation axis over time.

This cycle currently has a duration of 21,000 years, but this period would have been shorter in the past when the Moon was closer to Earth.

“Our study and several studies by other scientists are the only method of obtaining real data on the evolution of our solar system and will be very important for future models of the Earth-Moon system,” said Joshua Davies and Margriet Lantink.

They added that an important finding did not provide a full understanding of the evolution of the Earth-Moon system. We need more reliable data and new modeling approaches to track the evolution of the Moon over time.
