Jakarta –
Mother, case COVID-19 in Indonesia is apparently estimated to be much higher than the figures released by the government through the Ministry of Health. To date, 1.83 million COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Indonesia.
But it’s also important to know, Mother, that epidemiologists estimate the real number is much higher. This estimate is due to a lack of testing and contact tracing.
Reported Reuters, this was revealed from the results of the first large seroprevalence study in Indonesia that tested antibodies. One national study between December and January showed that 15 percent of Indonesians had contracted COVID-19.
While the official figures at the end of January, the infection was recorded at only about 0.4 percent. Meanwhile, currently, the total number of positive infections in Indonesia is only 0.7 percent of the total population.
“Contact tracing and testing in Indonesia is terrible and explains why so few cases have been detected,” said University of Indonesia study lead researcher Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono.
However, he confirmed that there was no authority to confirm these figures. The unexpected survey results were provided under the reporting of University of Indonesia Epidemiologist Pandu Rioni with assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO).
In response to this, the spokesperson for the COVID-19 Vaccination from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi said the study was still preliminary. Even so, he explained, there may be more cases than officially reported because many cases are without COVID-19 symptoms.
