Although there are a number of myths surrounding cancer treatment, symptoms and diagnosis breast, the most popular is that this condition only affects women. In fact, breast cancer can also attack men.
Although it is rare in men, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer in both men and women. Director of Breast Services at Medanta Hospital, India, Dr Kanchan Kaur, explained that the symptom of breast cancer in women in the form of a painless lump is often overlooked as the main sign. According to him, it is not much different from breast cancer in men, but its occurrence is so rare that people often ignore the possibility.

“One of the biggest myths we face as doctors is that some patients may feel a lump, but they don’t painful, they don’t think it’s related to cancer,” he said Times Now News, Thursday (7/10).
The public should understand that any changes in the breasts, such as discharge from the nipples, changes in the shape or size of the breasts, redness of the surface that fail to treat (even with medication from a doctor) should always be checked by an oncologist.
He said another myth encountered as an oncologist is how breast cancer is a woman’s disease even though it has been proven that men can get breast cancer. In 100 cases of breast cancer, 99 of them may be female but one person can be male.

Symptoms of breast cancer in men are similar to symptoms in women. The most common is a lump in the breast (which is often painless).
The sad side of this story is that due to low awareness about breast cancer in men, they are more likely to be diagnosed at a much slower stage because no one suspects breast cancer in them.
Dr Garvit Chitkara, senior consultant for Breast and Surgical Oncology at the Nanavati Max Institute of Cancer Care, said although rare, men can also get breast cancer and account for about one to two percent of all breast cancer cases. “As per our observations, the survival rate of men with breast cancer is poor compared to women which may be due to lack of awareness, timely diagnosis and treatment,” he said.

Dr Rohan Khandelwal, Breast Center at CK Birla Hospital, said a common misconception about gynecomastia (male breast cancer) is the thought that men “don’t have” breasts so they can’t get breast cancer. However, the truth is, we all have breast tissue.
“Usually, men have a wider chest (bigger than usual) because of fat, but sometimes men can also develop glandular breast tissue,” he said.
Breast cancer can appear in any area of the breast. In men, it is usually found near the nipple. Breast cancer can develop anywhere from the breastbone to the armpit or even the collarbone area.
Consultant surgeon oncology at Wockhardt Hospital, Meghal Sanghvi, explains the symptoms of breast cancer in men, the risk factors involved, and also shares some tips for women with regards to breast cancer management. He said, breast cancer in men is rare, only one percent of cases.

“However, the signs remain the same for both sexes, such as painless breast lumps, bleeding from the nipples, lumps or swelling in the armpits, breast eczema, and skin redness or ulcers on the breasts or on the nipples,” he said.
