Israel reports the first case of heart muscle inflammation or myocarditis associated with the Omicron variant. A hospital said it was working on the case.
Doctors at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer said the patient was a 43-year-old man. He was admitted to the COVID-19 ward of the hospital for myocarditis.
“This is the first time we have seen this (myocarditis) associated with Omicron. This is a worrying development that we need to think about,” said a cardiologist at the hospital, Prof Shlomi Matetzky, quoted from Times of Israel, Tuesday (11/1/2022).
“We continue to monitor patients who are currently in intensive care,” he continued.
The male patient infected with the Omicron variant had previously received a complete vaccination and a booster vaccination in August 2021. The unidentified man was also declared healthy, with no other congenital or comorbid health conditions.
It’s not just about the Omicron variant
Previously, a number of studies found that myocarditis and pericarditis (inflammation of the membranes around the heart) could also be caused by the earlier Corona variants. In very rare cases, the condition is also caused by the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, especially in younger men.
Omicron cases spike in Israel
Cases of the Omicron variant are currently on the rise in Israel. According to the Israeli Ministry, the number of registered COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms rose to 206 as of Sunday (9/1/2022).
The officials revealed that Israel is currently struggling to deal with the attacks of Corona variants, both Omicron and Delta which are very dangerous. If this continues, there are concerns the health system could be overwhelmed.
Therefore, the Israeli government urges the public to immediately get vaccinations and boosters. Moreover, the country has provided COVID-19 vaccinations for ages five and over.
