“There are things I should have done better, there are mistakes I made.” Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke said this on Thursday evening in ‘De Afspraak’, in response to the question whether he handled it properly during the first corona wave.

This week, Amnesty International released a damning report on the situation in the nursing homes during the first wave, which shows that many human rights have been violated. “One of the most difficult decisions was to close the residential care centers and close them for visitors. Because I knew it would take weeks and weeks, while many thought it was only about 14 days, ”said Beke.
When asked if he should not have resigned, Beke answered cautiously. “Did it solve something? I have spoken about it with my chairman and others, but they have urged me to continue. Because it wouldn’t have made any difference at the time. ”
“I recognize that we made mistakes. I’ve thought hard about quitting, but we’ve reached conclusions and decided to prepare for that second wave. We now also see that that has helped ”, Beke added.
