Weghorst was understandably surprised to be benched. In the previous match, he shone by scoring one goal when the Netherlands beat Greece 3-0 in the same event (7/9/2023).
Instead of being trusted to play from the start, Weghorst was instead substituted. The center forward position at that time was occupied by Donyel Mallen.
“Even though when I play, I can give positive energy, right? I get a bit annoyed if I don’t play. But of course, I am also happy with this result,” said Weghorst.
