The 30-year-old gave the Netherlands a comeback in the World Cup quarter-finals thanks to his two wildcard goals and secured extra time and subsequent penalties, which Argentina won.
He is said to have taunted his Argentine opponents and Messi during his mission, which led to the armored reaction of the gaucho captain. Weghorst told the Telegraaf: “I wanted to pay tribute to Messi after the match but he wasn’t ready to do it. I guess it’s a compliment that he knows my name. It means I did something right.”
