Wout Weghorst dreams of transfer to Eredivisie club: ‘I would like to’

Wout Weghorst would like to end his career at FC Twente, the 31-year-old striker from TSG Hoffenheim said in conversation with De Telegraaf. The 29-time international was always a fan of the Tukkers as a child and dreams of winning the Eredivisie with his childhood sweetheart.

Weghorst is still owned by Burnley, where he is contracted until mid-2025. The tall striker from Borne is playing on a rental basis for Hoffenheim this season. After fourteen appearances for the German mid-team, Weghorst has scored four goals. On one occasion the attack leader acted as a reporter.

Weghorst has been active abroad since 2018, when VfL Wolfsburg acquired him from AZ for more than 10 million euros. The right-hander is now thinking about a return to the Netherlands. “I am now in a phase where I also have other dreams, away from the sporting aspect. Ultimately, we would like to return to the east of the Netherlands and create a permanent place there.”

The striker knows exactly what he wants. “A beautiful detached house, cozy with the children, animals in the garden. But it comes as it comes. I am still only 31 years old and emotionally I am far from ready,” says Weghorst.

Although the attacker made waves at Heracles Almelo in the past, he would prefer to end his career at rival Twente. “I would like that. If it works, I really want to add value and become a champion. That would complete the circle.”

Weghorst previously played for FC Emmen, Heracles and AZ in the Netherlands. In the Eredivisie the counter stands at 51 goals and 17 assists in 124 matches. One level lower, in the Kitchen Champion Division, Weghorst scored 20 goals in 62 matches.

It currently seems unlikely that Weghorst will be feasible for Twente in the short term. The Dutch striker still receives a princely salary, while his market value is estimated at 9 million euros by Transfermarkt. Weghorst will expire from his contract in England in the summer of 2025, which may make him a realistic option for Twente.
