Wout Van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel in a clinch before the start of the Olympic road race: “Not in this day and age!”

Today (03/08) the Olympic road race will take place in Paris. During the race, riders are not allowed to use earphones, something that Wout van Aert does not agree with.

Just like at the World Championships, it is forbidden to use earphones, which means that riders get little information during the race. Mathieu van der Poel, however, has no problem with that. “I like racing without earphones. I am in favor of it. As a rider, you can then decide for yourself,” he says to Het Nieuwsblad.

“This is no longer of this time!”

Wout van Aert does not share that opinion. “In my experience, this is no longer of this time. I just think it is dangerous,” says Van Aert, referring to the World Cup in Glasgow last year.

Then the peloton was held up by activists on the road and the riders didn’t know what was going on for fifteen minutes. “There is no information for the riders. But hey, that’s just the way it is at the championships.” So a first joust before the race has even started!
