Worst US Stock Year Since 2008 – Breaking News – NRK

The worst year in the US stock market since 2008

It was a rough year for the stock market in both the US and Europe. Wall Street ended with the biggest drop since the financial crisis 14 years ago.

When US stock markets closed on Friday, it was clear the S&P 500 index was down 19.4% in 2022.

With the tech-heavy Nasdaq index, it was even worse: a 33% drop.

Even the European equity markets have a difficult year behind them, affected by the war in Ukraine, by high inflation and by the increase in reference rates.

European stock exchanges have not had such a bad year since 2018, writes Bloomberg on Friday.

On the last trading day of the year, the European Stoxx Europe 600 Index fell 0.8% on Friday afternoon, so the full-year decline was more than 12%.

In Frankfurt, too, the decline was 12 percent, while the Paris Stock Exchange settled on a decline of 9 percent.

In London, however, the FTSE 100 index closed with a rise of 0.9 percent for the whole year. The country’s energy sector has benefited from rising energy prices. The main index of the Oslo Stock Exchange fell by 1% in 2022.

Towards 2023, there is a fear of an economic decline affecting the markets. (NTB)
