Worst start to the season in years: FC Twente must now play catch-up

FC Twente has managed to collect four points after three matches. The team started with a 1-2 victory at NEC, drew 1-1 at home against Sparta a week later and lost 2-1 away to FC Utrecht last Sunday. For FC Twente, this is the second worst start to the competition since returning to the Eredivisie in 2019. Only in the 2021-2022 season were fewer points achieved.

Oosting had a flying start in the competition last season with nine points from the first three matches. The team was second at the time with a goal difference of only minus 1 compared to the eventual champion PSV. It was the start of a wonderful season in which FC Twente finished third. This season the team hopes to compete for this position again, but something has to change quickly. Five points lost in three matches is too much.

“It’s super annoying and not what you want”, Oosting also knows after the 2-1 defeat at FC Utrecht. “You just want to have a good start. Last year we had a really good start and now we don’t have that. I think the loss here is unnecessary, but it happens to us.” How are you going to turn this around? “We’re just going to continue with what we always do. Just keep training well. I thought we were dominant in football and also in defending”, the trainer concludes with the things that struck him positively.

The gap with undefeated PSV has now grown to eight points and with AZ and FC Utrecht to six points. However, all these clubs have played one more match than FC Twente. The Enschede club is not the only one with unexpected loss points. Feyenoord also lost four points in the first three matches by drawing against Willem II and Sparta. FC Twente has one point less than the Rotterdammers with the same number of matches.
