The footballers of the dwarf state of San Marino have won a match for the first time in twenty years, finally ending the longest winning streak in international football.
In a meeting between world numbers 199 and 210, ‘the worst team in the world’ defeated Liechtenstein 1-0 in the Nations League.
It was a victory that romantic football fans had been hoping for for years. San Marino is last in the world rankings, having lost 171 of their 176 international matches.
The 19-year-old striker Nicko Sensoli, playing for Sangiuliano in Serie D, the fourth Italian tier, put the dwarf state out of its misery in the 53rd minute.
The Netherlands once dealt the biggest football blow to the country with only 33,000 inhabitants. In 2011, San Marino was defeated 11-0 by the Oranje of national coach Bert van Marwijk.
The country’s previous victory came on April 28, 2004 in a friendly against – again – Liechtenstein.
