The chamber’s general manager, Matthias Fonger, spoke of a very difficult economic situation. In 2022, the economy in Bremen grew by 5.1 percent compared to the previous year, adjusted for prices – Bremen took the top spot among the states. Fonger said the figure could be zero or perhaps slightly negative for 2023. He also referred to economic surveys conducted by the Chamber of Commerce.
Dubbers-Albrecht calls for less bureaucracy. For example, people are against the approved training fund in the state. The planned fund is to be introduced in the 2024/2025 training year and will be financed with a levy from companies. The more companies train, the more money they receive. The State Court is currently dealing with a lawsuit from several chambers against the fund. The Chamber of Commerce expects a result in the second half of the year.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, the ports of Bremen recorded a decline in throughput. From January to November, throughput fell by 9.5 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the annual report. There were fewer exports and imports, said Dubbers-Albrecht. In addition, the productivity of the Bremen ports is unfortunately not as high as that of the western ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. Shipowners went where goods would be moved quickly.
