Worryingly low vaccination rates in Williamsburg

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Latinos are currently the city’s second-highest vaccinated group.

But this reality is not fully reflected in Williamsburg. And it is that according to data from the city in this area just over 55% of eligible people have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“I think that is bad, because we should all get vaccinated so that this virus ends,” said a neighbor.

This is in contrast to the 83% of eligible New Yorkers who have been vaccinated in all five boroughs. And is that some residents of South Williamsburg still think that vaccination is not safe.

“The problem is that nobody is safe with that. If you have the vaccine, they give you the virus, if you don’t have it, they give you … as soon as it is 100% I will put it on, as long as it is not 100% it is not right”, added another neighbor.

In fact, regardless of the fact that she is 72 years old and in the vulnerable group, Rosa says that she will not get the vaccine.

“If you take care of yourself you do not get sick, because I have spent two years and I have not gotten sick,” added the last neighbor.

The vaccination rate in Williamsburg contrasts with other Latino neighborhoods like Sunset Park, where 93% of eligible neighbors have already been vaccinated.

Faced with this scenario, some are afraid, especially for children under 12 years of age.

“I do not feel very satisfied considering that I am a mother and I have a child who cannot be vaccinated … The easiest to pass diseases are children, you know because they are learning how to have clean hands,” said another neighbor .
