Today, poultry organizations jointly send a letter to Minister Schouten asking them to introduce a shedding obligation. They are afraid that bird flu, which is now prevalent in Eastern Europe, will come to the Netherlands.
Around the turn of the year reports from the bird group came from Poland. The virus has now also appeared in Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. “The problem is already quite big,” says Gert-Jan Oplaat, chairman of the Association of Dutch Poultry Processing Industry (Nepluvi).
“The virus is spreading towards the German border in Poland. So it is coming our way. In the meantime, the virus has also been detected in a wild bird and it cannot be stopped by the measures we can take,” he says. RTV East.
With this Oplaat refers to extra cleaning and disinfection of, for example, trucks. Farmers are already being asked to adhere to this.
But that is not enough, he thinks. For that reason, the poultry that goes outside must, as far as they are concerned, be immediately shed. “Time is running out. I’m very worried.”
