On 16 September 2021, the Guinean Ministry of Health declared an end to the outbreak of the Marburg virus disease in Guéckédou prefecture, Nzérékoré Region.
In accordance with WHO recommendations, the declaration was made 42 days after the safe burial of the only confirmed patient reported in this outbreak.
This is the first reported case of Marburg virus disease in Guinea.
From August 3, 2021 until the end of the outbreak declaration, only one confirmed case was reported.
The patient, a man, had symptoms on July 25. On August 1, he went to a small health facility near his village, with symptoms of fever, headache, fatigue, stomach pain and bleeding gums.
Rapid diagnostic tests for malaria returned negative results, and the patient received outpatient supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment.
Upon his return home, his condition worsened, and he died on August 2.
The alert was then raised by the sub-prefectural public health care facility to the prefectural health department in Guéckédou.
