World’s Largest Salt Dam Construction Underway in Binnenspuikanaal: Gulliver Crane Ship Begins Placement

This concerns two pillars of the new salt dam to be built in the Binnenspuikanaal. The salt dam is a concrete construction that can prevent further salinization of the North Sea Canal through the use of the new, large sea lock. The salt dam is unique in the world.

The lifting job was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday, April 3, but Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson Pieter Zoon said that it appears that the wind is too strong on those days and that it has therefore been decided to bring the operation forward.

The two pillars of over 27 meters high are still standing on the side next to the canal. They were built on the shore, because building in water would have hindered the flow of the canal too much.

Gulliver

The special crane ship Gulliver is used to place the colossi of three million kilos of concrete in exactly the right place in the canal. This is a top-class crane vessel with a size of 108 meters long and 48 meters wide, which has two cranes of 90 meters high. These cranes together have a lifting capacity of 4,000 tons.
