World’s Largest Floating Restaurant Drowns, Eh Owner Cancel Claim

The owner of the world’s largest floating restaurant in Hong Kong has backed away from claims of sinking its fleet. That was after the authorities moved to investigate.

Reported CNNthe owner of the iconic Hong Kong floating restaurant who made headlines around the world after reports emerged that the restaurant was sinking at sea.

Then, last Thursday, the owner withdrew from his claim that his floating restaurant could not be saved. Previously, he insisted that the ship was still in waters near the Paracel Islands.

Jumbo Kingdom, an 80-meter high, three-story restaurant set in the style of the Chinese imperial palace. This fleet had to endure bad conditions last weekend when towed through the South China Sea.

“Water immediately entered the deck,” the owner said in a statement Monday.

“The water depth at the scene was more than 1,000 meters, making it very difficult to carry out rescue work,” the statement said.

But on Thursday, Jumbo Kingdom’s owner Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited faced pressure from authorities to reveal the circumstances surrounding the wreckage.

They said in a statement that the ship and accompanying tugboat were still in waters near the Paracel Islands, known as the Xisha Islands in China.

The statement, provided to the Hong Kong government, did not indicate whether the vessel was still afloat or had separated from its tugboat.

There was a shift in the message, which was followed by a request from the Hong Kong Department of Marine Affairs for the restaurant group to provide a written report on the incident as part of the initial investigation.

A spokesman for Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited told CNN on Friday that they always use the term reverse to describe the incident and have never claimed the ship sank.

Asked if this contradicted previous statements, the spokesman said the company was asked to report the depth of water in which (the incident) occurred. And, they refused to answer whether the ship was salvageable or afloat.
