Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – An diamond, which is believed to be the third largest in the world, was discovered. But not on the Asian continent but on the African continent.
Diamond weighing 1,098 carats found in Botswana. In fact, it has been shown directly to President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi.
The unnamed diamond was found in the Jwaneng mine belonging to the Debswana company that excavated it. This massive gem is only slightly lighter than the world’s second largest diamond, which was also discovered in Botswana in 2015.
“This is the largest diamond discovered by Debswana in its more than 50 years of operation,” said Lynette Armstrong, Acting Managing Director, Debswana Diamond Company. BBC International, quoted on Friday (18/6/2021).
“From our initial analysis, it could be the third largest gem quality stone in the world.”
Armstrong said a decision had not yet been made on whether to sell the rare stone. However, there are two potential selling companies, namely through De Beers or through the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company.
Debswana is a joint venture between the government and global diamond giant De Beers. As much as 80% of revenue from sales goes to the state treasury through dividends, royalties, and taxes.
An estimate of the stone’s potential cost has not been released. But in 2017, the second largest diamond ever found, named Lesedi La Rona, sold for US$ 53 million or Rp. 767 billion (assuming Rp. 14,400/US$).
