World’s highest-paid athlete withdrew from Australian Open :: Tennis :: RBC Sport

Former world number one Naomi Osaka of Japan has withdrawn from the Australian Open. This was reported on Twitter the first Grand Slam tournament of the season.

“Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Australian Open. We will miss you,” reads the message.

In the main draw, the 25-year-old Japanese will be replaced by Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

Osaka is currently ranked 42 in the WTA rankings. In 2019, it was the first racket in the world. For the past three years, Forbes has named Osaka the highest-paid female athlete on the planet.

The Japanese woman has four Grand Slam tournament victories: she won the Australian Open (2019, 2021) and the US Open (2018, 2020) twice each.

The Australian Open will be held from 16 to 29 January.
