According to a report by CNN on September 3, local time, after experiencing an unprecedented winter heat wave, the water level of Lake Titicaca, the highest in the world and the largest navigable lake in South America, is dropping sharply. The tourism, fishing and agricultural production activities that the local 3 million people rely on for their livelihood have been affected.

Some experts said that if the lake evaporates at the same rate as in previous years in the next few months, by December this year, the water level will drop to the lowest level since 1996.

A recent study of satellite imagery from 1992 to 2020 shows that Lake Titicaca loses about 120 million tons of water every year due to reduced precipitation and changes in runoff.

Lake Titicaca is located in the Andes Mountains at the junction of Peru and Bolivia, with an area of about 8,300 square kilometers and an altitude of 3,812 meters. It is the largest freshwater lake in South America. (produced by Zhou Jing)
