The world’s first laboratory-cultivated chicken will be sold commercially in Singapore on the 19th.
On the 16th, Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported that the American start-up Eat Just will sell chicken produced through cell culture in a laboratory rather than slaughter for dinner at the Singapore restaurant ‘1880’ on the 19th. It Just is a company invested by Hong Kong’s richest man, Li Ka Singh, and uses the muscle cells of chicken to cultivate chicken in a laboratory. The Singapore Food Authority (SFA) confirmed the safety of It Just’s cultured chicken on the 2nd and approved the sale.
The first people to eat cultured chicken dishes on this day are four students aged 13-18. Josh Tetrick, CEO of It Just said, “These students have promised to use a part of their lives to make the world a better place, and they share the same values as our company.” “The first people to consume meat that don’t need to be killed.”
The cultured chicken that will be served to them is a maple waffle with seasoning and hot sauce, bun with green onions and pickled cucumber, black bean puree, garlic, and pastry with lime.
As interest in health and animal welfare increases, interest in cultured meat produced through cell culture rather than slaughter is also increasing.
It Just is also working on other types of meat, including beef. The company’s lab-raised beef uses cells from cattle raised on pastures in California, USA and wagyu from a farm in Japan.
Tetric plans to sell beef products in Singapore next year after obtaining approval for sales. He predicts that if the production of cultured meat increases, the product price will be lower than that of conventional chicken and beef. “I hope Singapore isn’t the only country that can sell cultured meat,” Tetrick said. “We’re going to take our products to the United States and elsewhere.”
