“World’s First Babies Conceived by Robots: A Revolutionary Medical Breakthrough”

There is no doubt that technology has radically changed the way we perform various tasks and functions of our day to day. Despite the fact that there are different conflicts of interest and ethics, technology has also made it possible to advance in the medical area and save lives, but could it also create it?

It was recently revealed that two perfectly healthy girls were the result of a technique that proved that babies were born conceived by robots.

Babies conceived by a robot were born 1 month ago in the United States and were considered one of the most significant and revolutionary advances for the world of medicine, which, on this occasion, successfully used new technological tools.

The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) has also reached the fertility centers of Latin America, appearing a strong debate, however, the Crispr-Cas 9 system (for now legally prohibited, although three babies were born in 2018), makes possible to genetically edit our future children.

However, joining robots to the human fertilization process seems like a difficult thing to process. But recently, in a report published Through MIT Technology Review, a Spanish company was revealed that is capable of using a robot in part of the process.

What is in vitro fertilization?

According to one article, “in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the union of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish. In vitro means outside the body.

During this process, an embryologist (reproductive health specialist) is in charge of fertilizing the egg, a process that is extremely delicate. After this process, and with the approval of the experts, the egg is placed in the mother’s womb to continue with the embryonic development.

Overture Life, a company dedicated to embryonic development, offers an alternative to the manual process of fertilizing the eggs. The clinic takes the equipment to the United States.

Eduard Alba was the person in charge of using the sperm injection machine at the New Hope Fertility Center clinic in the North American city.

The process was extremely peculiar, since Eduard took out a PlayStation 5 controller to control the robot and the needle that would end up introducing the sperm into the egg.

«I was calm. At that exact moment, I thought: It’s just one more experiment,” said Eduard Alba, the mechanical engineering student who commanded the sperm injection device.

The robot achieved the process as a professional embryologist and as a result of this vitro fertilization, 2 completely healthy girls were born in North American territory, becoming the first process of this type, carried out hand in hand with technology.

Without a doubt, this is a great step in the world of embryology, which could make it possible for this method to have a higher success rate and be cheaper in a couple of years.
