World’s Fastest Electric Racing Kart Sets Record at Gotlandring’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

The Gotlandring race track in Sweden celebrated its 20th anniversary, bringing together celebrities, exclusive cars, the TOP GEAR team, Formula E and the world’s fastest record-breaking electric kart.

Among the many highlights of the Gotlandring celebration was the setting of a world record for commercially available electric racing karts, demonstrating the exciting possibilities of electricity in competition.

Record speed

The Gotlandring circuit provides the perfect setting with its 590-metre long, hill-free southern straight. To make the track a little longer, the race started from a corner, resulting in a 615-meter section with a braking zone. Ideal weather conditions included sunny skies and moderate winds of 1-2 m/s. Experienced Swedish karting driver Leo Obrant was at the helm.

This was my first experience with electric karts. I have raced internal combustion go-karts, but their racing speed is about 130-140 km/h. I’ve never driven a go-kart this fast before.

Leo Obrants

The record-setting electric kart reached a top speed of 163 km/h, cementing its position as the world’s fastest commercially available electric racing kart. This record required minimal modifications to the kart. The main idea behind this record setting was to show the performance that can be obtained from an “off the shelf” product.

Charging infrastructure and sustainability

The Gotlandring track is designed for racing cars, but the possibility to vary the layout of the track allows karts to hold the race as well. Gotlandring boasts a developed charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, including racing cars. In addition, the track’s electricity is obtained from local wind generators, fully in line with environmentally friendly racing ideas.

This is a true racing experience! Closest to F1 and Formula E racing. I recommend everyone to come and try it. It’s fantastic!

Alex Archo-Havren, Gotlandring founder, course designer and chief instructor

The Gotlandring circuit celebrations included the Formula E team, respected TOP GEAR journalists and an outstanding car and motorcycle show. It was truly a brilliant combination of speed, innovation and environmental responsibility.
