Jakarta –
World War II or commonly known as World War II (WW II) is claimed to be the deadliest international conflict in history. The reason is, this war has claimed the lives of 60 to 80 million people.
This immense war involved more than 50 countries and took place on land, sea and air. WW II occurred because of the economic crisis from the great depression and unresolved political tensions after the end of World War I.
World War II began when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, and continued with worldwide war until 1945. This war ended when Japan surrendered to the United States after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Starting from the German and Soviet Agreement
Launch page History, the devastation caused by World War I ultimately left Europe in a very unstable condition. In many ways, WWII grew out of problems that had not been resolved by previous conflicts.
One of the triggers for WW II was political and economic instability in Germany, as well as prolonged resentment over the conditions of the shells imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, leading to the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP in German and the Nazi Party in English).
In late August 1939, German leader Adolf Hitler and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin signed the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact which sparked great concern in London and Paris.
Prior to the agreement, Hitler was known to have long planned an invasion of Poland, a country guaranteed military support by Britain and France if attacked by Germany.
The pact with Stalin meant that Hitler would not face war on two fronts once he invaded Poland and would have help from the Soviets to conquer and divide his own nation.
On September 1, 1939, Germany launched its invasion of Poland by attacking from the west. Two days later, France and Britain declared war on Germany starting World War II.
On September 17, 1939, the Soviets attacked Poland from the east which caused Poland to fall rapidly. Germany and the Soviets then divided control of Poland in early 1940 according to a secret protocol annexed to the Non-Aggression Pact.
Early in WWII, Germany waged a fierce battle at sea against the British. German U-boats successfully attacked British-bound merchant ships and sank 100 of them in the first four months of WWII.
End of World War II
The Second World War was divided into two camps, namely the Axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) and the Allies (France, Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union) which ended with claims of victory from the Allies.
WW II was also one of the biggest turning points in the geopolitical history of the 20th century which resulted in the expansion of the Soviet Union’s power into countries in Eastern Europe, as reported by the Britannica website.
This allowed the communist movement to gain power in China, and marked a decisive shift of power in the world. The reason is, this power changed hands from western European countries to become in the hands of the United States and the Soviet Union.
The beginning of the end of World War II was marked by the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944 which opened a second front in Europe. The Landing, also known as Operation Overlord, was an allied invasion of Western Europe.
In addition, in the winter of 1944-1945, Germany launched an offensive to push the allies back from its territory in the Ardennes. Unfortunately, the offensive failed and was the last event of the German offensive on the western front during WWII.
Then Soviet troops advanced from the east to claim all of the territory under their control for the Soviets, while Allied troops converged on Berlin. After that Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945 and the war in Europe ended on May 8.
The United States then launched its island hopping strategy to destroy the main Japanese force across the Pacific.
Japan then surrendered to the Allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 ended World War II.
