FRANKFURT – To defuse a World War II bomb in Frankfurt on Wednesday, more than 2,000 people had to leave their homes in the morning. The evacuation was successful, the police said on Twitter. The defusing took place at 12:31 p.m. – successfully.

The 50-kilogram dud was found in an excavation in the Bockenheim district on Monday. There are also three hotels, a substation, two kindergartens and a school in the restricted area. The 648 motorway has to be closed for a few hours, and local public transport is also affected.

The city offers residents accommodation for the duration of the defusing, and they can visit the city museums and the zoo free of charge. “We want to help everyone affected to spend a few carefree hours in this situation,” said Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD).
