World War II bomb found in Cologne-Rodenkirchen – City of Cologne

Update 2 on the discovery of a World War II bomb in Cologne-Rodenkirchen

The security service has just started the first round of ringing. All persons (residents and employees) must leave the evacuation area immediately.

The following major roads in Rodenkirchen will have to be closed shortly in the evacuation area:

Brückenstrasse, Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse, Ringstrasse, Hauptstrasse, Schillingsrotter Strasse, Nibelungenweg and all other streets leading to the evacuation area.

As soon as the barrier material (so-called traffic sign 600) has arrived, the roads will be closed gradually.

Public transport by bus and train is also affected.

Tram lines 16 and 17 initially travel through the evacuation area without stopping or changing passengers. The last exit in the direction of Sürth/Wesseling/Bonn is the Heinrich-Lübke-Ufer stop, the next stop is Michaelshoven. Line 17 then continues to Sürth without any scheduled services. In the direction of Cologne city center, the last exit is Michaelshoven and the next stop is Heinrich-Lübke-Ufer.

Shortly before the unexploded bomb is defused, tram traffic is also stopped.

Bus lines 130, 131, 134 and 135 are no longer entering the evacuation area, but are bypassing it without stopping and then continuing on their original route.

Contact point is set up

For all people affected by the evacuation in Cologne-Rodenkirchen who cannot stay with family or friends, a contact point will be set up in the gymnasium of the Rodenkirchen high school, Sürther Straße 55. Access is via Siegfriedstraße 9. Pets are only allowed in crates; others unfortunately have to stay outside.

The operations control center of the public order service will be relocated from the Forest Botanical Garden to Schillingsrotter Weg 15, next to Fire Station II.

During construction work yesterday evening, August 5, 2024, an unexploded bomb from the Second World War was found in the Adamstrasse area. It is an American ten-ton bomb.

The aerial bomb must be defused today. To do this, the danger area must be cordoned off and evacuated. The bomb disposal service of the Düsseldorf district government (KBD) and the public order office of the city of Cologne are on site.

The public order office will decide on all further measures for cordoning off and evacuating. The final danger zone was determined by the KBD to be a radius of 500 meters. Around 6,000 people will be affected by evacuations, as well as two retirement homes and two clinics. It is not yet clear when the unexploded bomb will be defused.
