Chinese President Xi Jinping is said to have asked US President Joe Biden whether the new AUKUS alliance was an attempt to encircle China, according to the latter.
– When we set up the AUKUS cooperation with Great Britain and Australia, I was asked by Xi Jinping whether we were trying to encircle China. I said no, we’re just trying to make sure the waterways are kept open, Biden said Wednesday.
The revelation came during a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is visiting Washington. AUKUS is a tripartite security cooperation between the US, Australia and the UK in the Pacific and Indian Oceans that was established in 2021.
– This is in addition to the fact that we put together the “Gang of Four”, which China does not appreciate either, says Biden.
The so-called Gang of Four is a collaboration between the US, India, Japan and Australia to limit China’s influence in the region. Biden calls the cooperation important for maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indian Ocean. China raged against the establishment in its time.
