World Today Report: Hamas Leader Funeral, School Shooting, ISIS Attacks, Myanmar Prisoner Pardons, and Mount Merapi Volcano

You are back to reading the World Today report, Friday 5 January 2024 edition.

We have summarized the main news from the last 24 hours and we start with Lebanon.

Funeral of Hamas deputy leader

Thousands of people attended the funeral in Beirut of Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Aruri who was killed in an Israeli attack in Lebanon.

They gathered at a mosque to recite a prayer before marching to the Shatila refugee camp, where the three victims were buried.

Three coffins, namely Saleh’s body, the body of Azzam al-Aqraa from Hamas’ military wing Ezzedine al-Qassam, and Mohammad al-Rais, were wrapped in Palestinian and Hamas flags.

A machine gun was placed on top of each coffin and loud gunfire rang out as the funeral procession made its way towards the cemetery.

United States school shootings

Police reported that a student and five others were injured as a result of a shooting at a school in Perry, Iowa, United States.

The shooting occurred yesterday, when students were preparing to start lessons.

The 17 year old suspect was found dead after shooting himself.

Three victims were taken to nearby hospitals, while the other victims were transported to different hospitals.

ISIS claims attacks in Iran

Via social media, ISIS claimed responsibility for two suicide bomb attacks at an event commemorating the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

This incident killed at least 84 people and 284 others were seriously injured.

The ISIS group claims the names of the two attackers are Omar al-Mowahed and Seif-Allah al-Mujahed.

However, which branch of the ISIS group carried out this attack has not been identified.

Tens of thousands of Myanmar prisoners pardoned

To commemorate the 76th anniversary of Myanmar’s independence, the Myanmar military government pardoned nearly 10,000 prisoners.

But that number appears to cover only a fraction of the thousands of political prisoners jailed for opposing military rule.

In a state-run television report, the chairman of Myanmar’s military council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, granted pardon to 9,652 detainees.

The prisoner release began on Thursday and is expected to take several days.

Hot clouds of Mount Merapi

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported the presence of hot clouds that were sprayed as far as 1,800 meters on Mount Merapi which leads to the southwest of Kali Bebeng.

According to PVMBG head Hendra Gunawan, the hot cloud occurred at 18.18 WIB with a maximum amplitude of 19 millimeters and a duration of 155.56 seconds.

“The public is advised to stay away from the recommended danger areas,” read Hendra’s statement.

Since 2020, Mount Merapi has been in disaster status level III or alert because volcanic activity is still quite high in the form of effusive eruptions.
