Stroke is a dysfunctional disease or nervous system problems caused by impaired blood flow to the brain. In addition to the brain, it can also interfere with blood flow to the spinal area (spinal cord) and retina of the eye. The condition is often characterized by symptoms of neurological disorders.
“In the brain, there are symptoms of half-body paralysis and can cause disturbances of consciousness. In the spinal cord (spinal cord) it can be in the form of paralysis of the legs and arms. In the retina there is sudden blindness,” explained the dr. M Kurniawan, SpS (K) MSc. (stroke med), neurologist Cipto Mangunkusumo and representatives of the Indonesian Association of Neurologists in an online presentation through the official channel of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Wednesday (25 / 10/2022).
The brain itself is a vital human organ that must be kept healthy. Although the brain weighs only half a kilogram, its functions greatly affect human life, such as regulating the balance and movement of the body, storing memories, making the right decisions and creating intelligence. In particular, the spinal cord is responsible for regulating the motor, sensory and autonomic systems of the feet, hands and organs under the head.
So, if a person has a stroke that directly affects brain tissue, these functions will definitely not work properly.
“If he’s affected by the forebrain, then it could be a symptom of cognitive impairment. One of the things we can often hear now is dementia or senile dementia,” concluded Dr. Kurniawan.
“If it is in the motor center of the brain, half of the body can be paralyzed. So if it is in a vital area, such as the brainstem or brain stem, the patient’s consciousness will be disturbed. In this case, the condition will be affected. it’s like a coma, “he continued.
At least one in four people will have a stroke in their life. For this reason, Dr. Kurniawan explained that the risk of this dangerous disease can be reduced by treating it as soon as possible by medical experts.
One of the government programs to detect stroke is SeGeRa in the hospital. This step is an abbreviation for stroke symptoms that often occur in the community, namely asymmetrical smile, suddenly weakened half-body movement, slurred speech / difficulty speaking, numbness, sudden blindness, and severe headaches that are not never been warned before. .
“So, the presentation this time around is ‘treat stroke immediately to prevent disability.’ SeGeRa stands for smile, movement and conversation,” he said.
If treated too late, stroke can cause damage to brain cells and accelerate premature aging for up to 36 years. Therefore, a person who has become aware of the symptoms of a stroke should report the situation to a doctor immediately.
