Football commentators and former players Harry Redknapp, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane are helping to promote betting on World Cup matches despite tougher rules on approving celebrity betting to protect young people.
FIFA officials estimate that the last World Cup generated $150 billion in wagers. Gambling companies are expecting a similar surge in betting for this year’s tournament, despite Qatar’s gambling ban.
Redknapp, the former West Ham and Spurs manager who won the TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2018, it is promoting BetVictor’s World Cup coverage with an advertising campaign and expert commentary on the brand’s website.
Former England forward Crouch is a brand ambassador for betting firm Paddy Power and appears in tournament advertising. It also appears on an “album” backed by Paddy Power, Crouchy directs the classics lasting seven minutes, with proceeds going to the Stonewall charity.
Last month it was announced that former Tottenham player and Republic of Ireland international Keane had become a Betway brand ambassador. It will provide expert advice for the World Cup.
New rules came into force in the UK on October 1 to prevent celebrities with a “strong appeal” to young people from promoting the game. The Advertising Standards Authority, the independent regulator, said the new rules would “significantly” affect advertisers of gambling that use celebrities and prominent athletes.
