World-renowned Filmmakers Unite Against Proposed Defunding of Argentine Cinema

More than 300 world-renowned directors, producers, performers and technicians have raised their voices in an initiative promoted by the Cine Argentino Unidos collective to oppose the defunding proposed by the Omnibus Law against the seventh art in our country.

The statement, also supported by Cannes Palme d’Or winners such as Aki Kaurismäki and the Dardenne brothers, as well as other prominent international filmmakers, was released by the United Argentine Cinema coalition and picked up by the specialized site Variety.

In the statement, the coalition noted: “Argentina has built a vibrant, heterogeneous and dynamic film industry since its inception. Since 1944, the country has had state institutions that regulate and promote film activity using the resources generated by audiovisual exploitation”. They also highlighted the importance of public policies and the Film Law in the development of the Argentine film industry.

The signatory artists warned about the negative consequences that could arise from the implementation of the proposed law, mentioning that Argentine cinema is an industry that generates employment, exports content and attracts foreign investments. They warned that the proposed cuts would have a “devastating, incalculable and irreparable effect on all culture and national sovereignty”, especially for workers in cultural industries, resulting in a significant increase in unemployment.

Among the signatories are Pedro Costa, Asif Kapadia, Cornelius Porumboiu, Abel Ferrara, Mira Nair, Roger Corman, Isabel Coixet, Laurent Cantet, Maribel Verdu, Pablo Larrain, Justine Triet, Wagner Moura, Carlo Chatrian, Maite Alberdi, Arnaud Desplechin and Jose Luis Rebordinos, Alberto Barbera, Emma Suarez, Juan Diego Botto, Andy Muschietti, Victor Kossakovsky, Manuela Martelli, Miguel Gomes, Sebastian Lelio and Walter Murch.
