On September 28, worldwide attention is being drawn to the danger of rabies, also known as rabies. This year the theme of World Anti-Rabies Day is “Breaking the Boundaries of Rabies”. To fight this disease, we must work together across borders and sectors.
This means that governments, health organizations and vets, among others, need to find each other better. Rabies knows no borders, which is why it is important that we face this disease worldwide.
The WHO has a global goal to eliminate dog rabies deaths by 2030 with the Zero by 30 plan. The most important thing about this is that healthcare is available to all.
What is rabies?
Rabies is a rare infectious disease that can infect animals and humans. The disease is caused by a virus. The disease is fatal and can be contracted through a bite, scratch or bite from an infected animal such as a dog, cat, monkey or bat. This disease almost never occurs in the Netherlands, usually in patients who acquired the virus abroad.
What can you do against rabies?

- Don’t pick up bats.
- Take immediate action if you have been bitten, scratched or licked by a foreign mammal: Wash the wound for 15 minutes with soap and water and disinfect the wound.
Contact your travel insurance or emergency center immediately to discuss what to do and where to go. Go immediately to a hospital or medical center and discuss what vaccines and antibodies you may still have.
Even if you have been vaccinated before your trip, you should still visit a hospital or medical center for additional treatment!
