Surabaya – World Rabies Day is celebrated every September 28. The following is the history and the theme carried this year.
The aim of commemorating World Rabies Day is to make people around the world aware of the dangers of rabies in the environment. Reporting from the Riau Province Livestock and Health Service, rabies is the deadliest disease, by transmitting viruses from animals to humans.
According to 2020 data on the official website of the Riau Province Livestock and Health Service, 59,000 people died due to rabies, with a percentage of 95% of deaths in Asia and Africa caused by dog bites.
Where 40% of those affected by rabies are children under 15 years of age. However, rabies can be prevented with a vaccine for animals that transmit rabies (HPR), as well as anti-rabies serum for people who have been bitten by a dog and are thought to have rabies.
History of World Rabies Day
Quoting the official website of the Riau Province Livestock and Health Service, in 1885, there were French microbiologists named Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux, who succeeded in developing a rabies vaccine and testing the vaccine on humans. The results of these trials reduced the number of human deaths from rabies due to dog bites.
On September 28, 1895, Louis Pasteur died. Therefore, to commemorate the services of Louis Pasteur, every September 28 is celebrated as World Rabies Day.
In 2007, the Rabies Control Alliance (ARC) together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated World Rabies Remembrance Day. World Rabies Day was successfully held in 74 countries with a reach of 1.5 million people.
The celebration was filled with vaccination of 270,000 animals. Apart from that, it also received support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
To organize World Rabies Day, a non-profit organization was appointed as coordinator, namely the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC).
World Rabies Day 2023 theme
Reporting from the official website of the World Health Organization (WHO), the theme for World Rabies Day 2023 is All for 1, One Health for All or in Indonesian All for 1, One Health for All.
The goal is to give confidence to the public, and build a system structure for zoonotic diseases that are vulnerable to pandemics. Apart from that, this program also wants to provide guarantees regarding fair access to health services and post-rabies profiles.
This was done to minimize the lack of public services regarding rabies, and to make the safety of human lives the most important thing. This will strengthen the national health system.
Currently, the world of health can produce drugs, vaccines, equipment and sophisticated technology to combat the cycle of rabies.
This theme also has a meaning that is no less important than reducing the number of rabies. Namely teaching a sense of equality by strengthening the health system to all levels of society throughout the world.
So One Health is not only used by upper class people. But all people from any group.
To achieve one goal, namely One Health, one way is by collaborating. The community is committed to maintaining the provision of vaccines to dogs.
