The concert program will feature Georg Friedrich Handel’s Concerto for Organ and Chamber Orchestra, Op. 4 no. 6, Alfred Kalniņš’s “Christmas Lullaby” for solo organ, Franz Liszt’s “March of the Three Wise Men” and “Lighting the Christmas Tree” from the piano cycle “Christmas Tree”, Georg Friedrich Handel’s Concerto grosso from the oratorio “Alexander’s Feast” for orchestra.
The main event in this concert program will be the world premiere of Richard Dubra’s new work “Concertino di Natale” (“Christmas Concertino”) for piano and chamber orchestra. “Here [šajā skaņdarbā] the task that I have imagined for myself is not to show the extreme capabilities of a pianist to the maximum and crack some technical tricks.
Here, as usual in my Christmas works, I am more interested in its mysticism. We have a lot of joy, the joy of Christmas morning, but I am more interested in what happens the night before – how the child is born, because there are also certain difficulties and problems…
Well, there will still be a small portion of joy,” composer Rihards Dubra reveals in the Latvian Radio 3 program “On the Road with Classics”.
Pianist Daumants Liepiņš, with whom the composer is collaborating for the first time, will be the soloist of the premiere of Rihardas Dubra’s composition. “We met in person and I had a very good impression, especially after he had just played [skaņdarbu] and immediately said that he thought it was very bright,” says Dubra.
“I was actually a little afraid that the tragic chord had crept into that music too much, but if one young person from the outside immediately says that he feels that way [gaiši]then it’s clear that the soul immediately becomes easier,” the composer reveals about the collaboration with Daumanta Liepina.
The composer emphasizes that it is important to him which artist performs the premiere of the piece. “The fact that I know exactly who will play plays a big role, and I count on that. This is not my first work that Sinfonietta Rīga plays, and it is not my first Christmas work that they play either,” explains Dubra .
According to Dubra, almost all Christmas compositions are created in the summer, around July, so that it is ready for Christmas time and the artists have time to master it.
“It’s always been the craziest thing that you’re sitting at your desk, the sun is shining outside, the window is open, the birds are chirping, maybe it’s +28 degrees and you have to imagine the Christmas trees, the baubles and everything else.
It has always been very difficult, but it belongs to the profession,” emphasizes the composer.
In the subtitle of the piece “Concertino di Natale”, the composer stated that it can be played at any time of the year, because the feeling created by it can enter the hearts of listeners even when it is not Christmas. “What I generally want with my music is somehow to try to increase the good, to try to show people that there are not only problems and counting money in the world, but there are also some bright, warm feelings that we could have not only towards the closest , but sometimes also towards complete strangers. I think we should increase the feeling of joy and increase the feeling of good, that’s what I try to do in my music,” explains Dubra.
